Florida Governor Charlie Crist today added No-Fault personal injury
protection insurance, (PIP) to the call for the special session that
begins Wednesday of this week.
The state-mandated PIP law had been in effect for more than 30 years and in that time critics say it had become rife with fraud and abuse. It sunsetted today Monday at 12:01 a.m. Some insurers have fought to reform the system while others maintain it is too far broken to be fixed.
The Legislature will now take a stab at reform, however, Governor Crist indicated there is still no guarantee legislators will be able to come to any agreement on two identical bills specifically added to the call which are aimed at reforming and re-enacting PIP.
