TALLAHASSEE, FL--The National Hurricane Center's forecast track takes Hurricane Ike across south Florida late Monday or Tuesday as a category 3 or 4 hurricane. There is still much uncertainty regarding its exact track, but landfall could be anywhere in Dade, Broward or Monroe counties.
"Most people think it is south Florida, but it could be the Keys, it could slow down, there could be strengthening," Division of Emergency Management Director Craig Fugate said. But the track is "so uncertain, it could miss us."
The Florida Insurance Council, the state's largest non-profit insurance trade association, is the only industry association with a state-designated seat at the Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee. From that position FIC is able to assist emergency disaster workers with planning and executing emergency relief to Florida residents impacted by catastrophes such as hurricanes.
FIC is currently staffing the center and will maintain presence there until the state of emergency is lifted. The EOC is expected to move into full activation status on Sunday. Our presence keeps us in touch with the latest developments and affords us the opportunity to coordinate with insurance company catastrophe teams so that they can bring speedy relief to affected policyholders.
There are two specific links to the FIC website that reporters should find helpful in covering catastrophe events--the 1-800 hotline numbers for insurance company contacts, and a media contact list for reporters to get up-to-the-minute information.
