Virtual News Conference Scheduled with Dr. Robert Hartwig,
President of Insurance Information Institute conomic Implications of
No Hurricanes Striking Florida for the Second Straight Year
(TALLAHASSEE, Fla.) –For the second straight year, Florida has been spared landfalls by a hurricane, but Florida citizens should not be lulled into a sense of false security.
The fact is, the 2007 hurricane season saw two category 5 hurricanes form and strike Central America. For the United States, particularly Florida, the good news is that both of those major storms veered south of us. Had steering currents pushed them across our state, the impact of either or both of those storms combined, could have devastating.
Experts continue to predict that we are in the middle of a 15-to-20 year period of increased hurricane activity.
Dr. Robert Hartwig, President, Insurance Information Institute, New York, will discuss the 2007 hurricane season, and the economic implications of the lack of storms striking our coast for every Floridian as well as the insurance industry.
For the second straight year, Dr. Harwig will conduct a briefing via a Virtual News Conference. This year’s briefing is scheduled for Thursday, November 29, at 11 a.m., Eastern Time.
By following directions we will circulate later, reporters can follow Dr. Hartwig’s PowerPoint on the Internet while listening to his briefing by telephone.
The Florida Insurance Council will distribute the PowerPoint by email to media outlets unable to access the Virtual news conference.
